Mahjong is easier to learn at a table with friends than from a rulebook, and that's exactly how we teach it. Our Beginner Mahjong series takes you from never having touched a tile to playing full games of American Mah Jongg with confidence, in small groups at The Lillie in Summerland, just south of Santa Barbara.

What you'll learn

  • The tiles, the racks and how to build the wall
  • The Charleston, the passing ritual that opens every hand
  • How to read the National Mah Jongg League card and choose a hand
  • Calling, exposing and jokers
  • Playing full games with guidance, until it clicks

Good to know

  • No experience needed. Series run three or four sessions, so each lesson builds on the last.
  • Your series includes the official 2026 National Mah Jongg League card.
  • Tables, tiles and racks are set up for you in the shop.
  • Small groups, taught by our own instructors.
